Rocky Gold is a Third Person 3d brawling game that I worked on as a Game Designer and Level Designer. My focus was to work on creating interesting spaces. I worked on creating the different level design and the spacing between different assets. I created fun, exciting levels that told a story.
Level Design, Production, Version Control
My main responsibility as a Lead Level Designer and Producer on Rocky Gold was to develop the 3 main levels of Rocky Gold. My main focus was to develop the levels from the ground up, starting with ideation and ending with 3 polished levels.
While working on Rocky Gold I learned many different valuable skills. One of these skills was spacing. The approach to the level design of this game had to be very specific since it was an action brawler. One of the main challenges I had while designing these levels was understanding spacing when it came to interactions with enemies and action. In each room the player entered, the enemies would spawn, and the only way to get through was by defeating all of them.
To make this design work, I had to make rooms big enough with just a few enemies in each space. I also created a delay in the code of the enemies farthest away from the entrance of each room, as to give you time before fighting them. With obstacles in between you and the enemies, the player is able to use the spacing of the room to create fights with only 1 or 2 enemies at a time. This fabricated a sense of urgency as you could see more enemies that you would have to fight.
The design process helped me refine my skills in coordinating communication between team members. Most of our team members were working with the team virtually, and as such it was my job to make sure everyone was on the same page. I laid out a communication plan through the use of Discord and Trello. By using these, we were able to track what everyone was working on and make sure that we could work with one another easily.
I was also responsible for Version Control. We used GitHub and then transferred to Perforce for the first time. Since this was the first time anyone had worked with Perforce I had to teach myself, and then once I understood the basics I taught the rest of the team what I learned. Throughout the semester, there were many issues that I had to solve and through trial and error I became an expert when it came to Perforce.
